EDU edition
In Unitree’s official comparison, secondary development support is listed only for the R1 EDU. The R1 Air and standard R1 do not list this feature in the manufacturer’s table.

The R1 development guide describes DDS communication, a C++ SDK and a Python interface, plus ROS 2 communication routines. Documented interfaces include motion control, robot state, video streaming and SLAM and navigation services.

The EDU edition takes an expansion module on its back, with a computing unit intended for developer applications. Unitree also lists high-performance modules from multiple brands and models, such as Orin options rated 40 to 100 TOPS, and optional dexterous hands, which increase the total number of degrees of freedom.

The upper body concentrates 24 V and 36 V power outputs, a Gigabit network port, an external emergency-stop connector and M4 mounting holes for sensors and peripherals. The architecture separates the development unit from the manufacturer’s control services, and support for simulation platforms allows algorithms to be tested before running on the physical robot.
Secondary development means building applications using the manufacturer’s available interfaces; it does not mean unrestricted access to the robot’s source code or firmware. Features and permissions depend on the edition, configuration and current documentation. Motion and control tests must follow Unitree’s safety guidelines in a controlled environment, keeping a safe distance from people.
